Mindful moments beneath and beyond the waves.

When most people think of Kenya, their minds go straight to safari adventures. But beyond the savannah, Kenyaโ€™s coastline hides beach town gems like Diani Beach, Kilifi, and Watamu, and some surprisingly good diving. During my nine-month journey through Africa, I made my way to Kenya and discovered an unexpected highlight: taking my rescue diver course in Diani Beach.

Scuba Diving in Diani Beach, Kenya: My Underwater Experience

I spent two weeks in Diani Beach, and in just three days, I completed my PADI Rescue Diver and Emergency First Responder courses. Of course, I also carved out time for some fun dives, and Iโ€™m so glad I did. Diving in Kenya surprised me in all the best ways.

Diani Beach is a nesting ground for green and hawksbill sea turtles, so we were lucky enough to dive with turtles on nearly every dive. I also had several unique underwater encounters: I spotted my first mantis shrimp, interacted with a curious octopus, and got โ€œadoptedโ€ by a school of fish at the MFV Funguo Wreck site.

While Kenya might not be world-famous for its megafauna, thereโ€™s still incredible macro life and biodiversity worth exploring.

From Fun Dives to Rescue Skills: Why I Took the Course

While those fun dives were incredible, the real reason I came to Diani Beach was to take my PADI Rescue Diver course. Itโ€™s a key step on the journey toward Divemaster, and I chose to complete it separately to focus on the learning.

I trained with Diving the Crab, a dive center that offered the supportive, hands-on environment I was looking for. The course was serious and demanding at times, but ultimately one of the most rewarding Iโ€™ve taken. You donโ€™t just learn theory, you actively practice real-world scenarios that build confidence and skill.

The biggest takeaway? You must save yourself first. If youโ€™re panicking, you canโ€™t help anyone else. And to do that, you need solid safety habits and strong diving techniques.

4 Ways the Rescue Diver Course Made Me a Better Diver

  1. I Anticipate Problems Before They Happen

Iโ€™ve become more aware of potential dive issues and now notice concerns, like gear problems or site conditions, before we even enter the water.
  2. I Stay Present and Aware of My Surroundings

Mindfulness underwater allows me to enjoy the dive and keep an eye out for others. Being fully present means I can respond quickly if someone needs help.
  3. I Stay Calm Under Pressure

Panic is contagious. Iโ€™ve learned how to breathe through stress and stay composed, which helps everyone stay cool during unexpected situations.
  4. Iโ€™m Constantly Improving My Skills

A great diver is always learning. In Dahab, Egypt, my nitrox buddy was a newly certified Advanced Open Water diver. He ran low on air during our first dive, so on the next one, I checked in often and helped him manage his air more efficiently. It was a small way to support him and ensure a safer, smoother experience.

Thinking About Taking the Rescue Diver Course? Hereโ€™s What to Expect

The PADI Rescue Diver course typically takes 2โ€“3 days, depending on your dive center. It includes eLearning and practical sessions where youโ€™ll role-play different rescue scenarios underwater and on the surface. Youโ€™ll also need to complete an Emergency First Responder course, which can be PADI-certified or from another recognized provider.

Taking this course in Diani Beach not only advanced my scuba training, but it also transformed my confidence and deepened my appreciation for diving. It made me more proactive, aware, and ready to help others.

Resurfacing and Reflecting

Whether youโ€™re working toward a professional diving path or simply want to feel more confident underwater, I would recommend the Rescue Diver course. Itโ€™s challenging, yes, but also empowering.

If youโ€™re not planning to dive professionally, it may not be necessary, but if youโ€™ve ever wanted to feel more capable in the water, this course delivers.

Have you taken a course that changed the way you dive? Iโ€™d love to hear about your experience. Share it in the comments!
